As a result of the new structure of the West Midlands Young Combined Authority (WMYCA) - having come into place for 2020/21, it is with great delight today (September 30th 2020) to announce that I will serve as the YCA’s Co-Portfolio Lead Member for Transport! For the benefit of all, this excludes the remit of High Speed 2, which sits under the Environment and Energy portfolio.
Working alongside Walsall representative Asad Kaling, we will input into the CA’s Transport Delivery Committee, put a youth swing on to major announcements and be engaged with stakeholders – right from across the region, to push for greater accessibility on the network, targeted investment where it currently lacks, the continued expansion of the SWIFT scheme, greater emphasis on creating cleaner forms of travel and much more alongside these projects too.
Having been on the West Midlands Trains Midlands Stakeholder Equality Group for over 9 ½ months and attending the first ever Regional Road Safety Group meeting in June, the insight I’ve had on the region’s connectivity, makes me excited to engage further and I very much look forward to doing that, with Portfolio Lead Member, in Birmingham City Council Leader Councillor Ian Ward, Transport for West Midlands and hopefully all 7 Local Authority cabinet members, who have transport in there remit.
And knowing of the huge investment across the board and the desire to make the system much friendlier than before, I hope the next 12 months will continue to demonstrate, why the West Midlands Combined Authority both exists and has voices like mine, made loud and clear!
